Friday is the Terry Fox walk at Henderson Lake after lunch - weather permitting. Students are encouraged to bring a toonie or donate online, but a donation is not required.

Friday students are required to write a spelling test and write out their Bible Memory verse. It would be great is you would review the spelling list and the Bible with them. Both items are pasted into their Agenda books.

You can help at home by drilling your student with multiplication tables to 10 by 10.

We have stated volleyball in PE class.

On October 2 we will be going to the Lethbridge land fill for a short-guided tour. Are you an active recycler at home?

We are studying the legacy of Abraham at school. Why not ask you student what they have learned about him and his family at your home.

Next Monday is Orange Shirt day. ICES students are asked to wear Orange shirts!
The story behind Orange shirt day is of a First Nations girl who was stripped of an Orange shirt her very first day attending a Residential school.  She was given this shirt by her grandmother and she was excited about attending school.  From that day forward her attitude changed as not only was her shirt taken, but she was not allowed to see her family or speak her native language.  The concept of Residential schools was introduced to have First Nations children attend a boarding school of sorts and to help them become European in their religious practices, traditions, learning and thinking. The end result was that many of the First Nations people who attended lost a sense of their identity and culture and even associate their own culture with shame.
We as Christians recognize that everyone is created in the image of God.  We believe Jesus to be the way, the truth and the life, and while not everyone believes this, our mission is to show people this through our words and actions. Everyone deserves to be respected and loved as an image bearer.

Have a blessed week......

You can help at home by drilling your student with multiplication tables to 10 by 10.

We will be starting volleyball soon in PE class.

Mr. Lieuwen

At ICES we invite students to see their place in God’s Story of creation, fall, redemption and restoration. Each classroom has created a unique storyline to help students deepen their understanding of the role they play in God’s unfolding Story of redemption. These storylines come from deep hope we as teachers have for our students.

                      My Deep Hope for Students

Our deep hope for students in grade four is that as they learn more about the character, love and attributes of God, they come to trust Him in a deep and personal manner.

Our Classroom Story Line

“Trust the Light”

Jesus is the light of the world. His light guides us as we journey through the treacherous waters of life. As we experience and come to understand his provision, love and protection in grade 4, students begin to trust Him more and more.

Key Scripture

John 8:12 - When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Ephesians 5:13 - But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

Luke 1:79 - To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Proverbs 3:5/6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Dear Parents:                                            September 2019

Welcome to the start of the 2019/2020 school year. It’s exhilarating. Welcome to grade 4. This year we have three grade 4 classes with a total of 59 students so far. We are looking forward to an exciting year.

As a Christian teaching in a Christian school, it is my prayer and determination that my classroom be a positive learning and social experience for every child that the Lord brings into my class. Together new and exciting discoveries will be made in His word, in curriculum, and in relationship with each other. This journey that we experience together will help us develop Christian discipleship. The Psalmist tells us that we are to teach our children the mighty deeds of the Lord (Ps. 78:6), and so, in partnership, we will. In a strong alliance between home, school and church we will discover more of God’s love for us, His requirements of us, and His desire for us to walk in relationship with Him and our fellow man. At school we will work at integrating faith and learning.

Our theme for our classroom is: Trust the Light. We look to Jesus, who is the light of the world, for all things. The first verses we explore and memorize this Fall will be references to Jesus as our light and as the light.

Things to consider as we begin the year:

  • Opening assembly is Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 9 a.m.
  • There will be forms to fill in and return to school the first week of school.
  • Please check the school website regularly for my weekly update. We are Grade 4A in the list. I plan to have the site updated by Monday PM each week.
  • Generally spelling work and Bible memory are completed on Monday with the tests then occurring on Friday. The spelling list and Bible Memory will be attached to the Agenda Book each Monday for home review/study. Please ensure that your child knows their memory work each week.

Here is a quick overview of who does what in grade 4.

  • Lieuwen will be the home room teacher and teaching: Language Arts, Math, Bible, Science, Social, Art and P.E.
  • Greeno will be teaching Health.
  • Peters will be teaching Music and French.
  • Konynenbelt will be facilitating library time.

My main mode of communication to parents this year will be via our school webpage (this blog) and the link to 4A ( In addition, students will have an agenda book that should travel between school and home each day. The agenda book will always contain the week’s spelling list and the Bible memory, which are both due on Friday. Materials or notes to go from school to home should travel via the Agenda.

This is the first of several theme (Trust the Light) verses for the year.

John 8:12 - When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
